Learning With Omega
The Omega case study is an online simulation that provides a learning environment in which students must actively construct knowledge for the development of the case. Omega is constructed as a Bio/Genetics firm marketing hybrid crops to the third world. Students play the role of consultant in the firm and are asked to provide documentation, advice, and support for upcoming changes that the company is experiencing. As students interact with the case materials, they confront a number of issues such as: discrepancies between what company officers are saying in public that conflicts with scientific data, issues of intellectual property and their relation to non-profit activity, and finally the need to assemble a coherent story about the Omega corporation and its situation. The purpose of the Omega case study is to provide students with an experience as close to the workplace as possible within a classroom setting.
In order to provide the highest level of realism, the Omega case interface uses a variety of information and multimedia including: video footage of corporate meetings, video/audio interviews with characters in the case, access to organizational documents, access to an organizational intranet. The Omega interface also provides students with a series of collaboration tools to communicate with each other about the case such as: discussion boards, email, polls, and surveys.
